"I had the same experience regarding heading styles.

Turns out that's not exactly the case. It depends on the style of the
line that your cursor happens to be on when you insert the TOC. So if
you make sure to set the style of the line to normal text before
inserting the TOC on that line, you'll get a normal text formatted
TOC. 8-)"
